Virginia Tech Nips Furman, 4-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Virginia Tech women's team concluded an opening day sweep with a narrow 4-3 win over host Furman Saturday evening. Tech defeated Georgia State, 6-1, earlier in the day to open the dual match season. The contest was held at the Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center on the Furman University campus.

Tech (2-0), ranked No. 60 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason national poll, won two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day then split the six singles contests for the victory.

In singles, Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) won comfortably at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1, against Monica Arguello while Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) had no trouble at No. 3 defeating Lauren Osbourne, 6-1, 6-4. Tech's other win occurred at No. 6 as Abbey Walker ( Jr., Lancaster, S.C.) Natasa Manojolvic, 6-4, 7-5.


Hokies Defeat Georgia State, 6-1

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team had a successful opening to the 2008 dual match season with a 6-1 victory over Georgia State. The match was held at the Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center on the Furman University campus.

Tech (1-0), ranked No. 60 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason national poll, swept through the three doubles matches for the first point of the day then took five of the six singles contests for the victory.


Tigers Open Season With 6-1 Victory Over Troy

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Clemson women's tennis team opened its 2008 season with a 6-1 win over Troy on Saturday at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The Tigers posted victories at the first five singles positions after sweeping the doubles matches.

Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem partnered at the number-one doubles position to defeat the Trojans' tandem of Annabelle Bares and Rawia El Sisi, 8-4. At flight two, sophomores Estefania Balda and Ani Mijacika posted an 8-1 victory over Leonie Guijt and Mirte De Bakker, while Ina Hadziselimovic and Alexandra Luc won easily over Troy's Caroline Jounia and Stephanie Vieria, 8-2, at the number three slot.

Salge, a senior from San Roque, Brazil, faced 65th-ranked Bares at the top singles spot on Saturday. With the scored tied at three games apiece in the first set, Salge broke Bares' serve and won the next two games to claim the set. The 85th-ranked Tiger then won the second set by the same margin.


No. 1 Georgia Tech Drops USF with 7-0 Sweep

ATLANTA - Christy Striplin and Noelle Hickey opened the match with an 8-0 doubles win and Amanda McDowell won her first 11 games en route to a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory to lead No. 1 Georgia Tech (2-0) to a 7-0 win against No. 29 USF (6-1) Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

"It felt good to get a win at home against another solid team," said head coach Bryan Shelton. "I felt like we came out of the blocks fired up in doubles, and then jumped on them in singles, especially in the first three matches."

The victory was Georgia Tech's 23rd-straight, dating back to March 3, 2007, and the Yellow Jackets have won 19 consecutive home matches, dating back to the 2006 season.

Striplin and Hickey improved to 9-4 on the season and 2-0 in dual matches with their sweep of Natalia Guevara and Jessica Sweeting before Kristi Miller and Kirsten Flower won seven consecutive games to finish off an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, giving Georgia Tech a 1-0 lead in the match. McDowell and Whitney McCray then finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Allyn Mueller and Jessica Zok at the No. 2 spot.


Cavaliers Split Season Opening Doubleheader

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia women's tennis team opened its 2008 dual match schedule by splitting a doubleheader at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers defeated Richmond 6-1 in the nightcap after falling to Marshall 6-1 in the opener.

In the season opener, the Cavaliers were defeated by a strong Thundering Herd squad. Marshall took a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) scored an 8-4 win over Thaddea Lock and Isabell Raich at No. 2 doubles, but Marshall's wins at No. 1 and No. 3 gave the Herd the opening point. Marshall used the momentum from doubles in singles, taking five of the six matches. Rales recorded Virginia's only point, defeating Karolina Soor 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.


No. 21 Deacons Fall 4-2 at No. 15 William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After taking four first set wins in singles, the No. 21 Wake Forest women's tennis team was unable to finish with an upset over No. 15 William & Mary on Saturday, falling 4-2 to the Tribe in Williamsburg.

The Demon Deacons (0-1) will look to the upcoming four-match homestand, starting with Penn State on Saturday, February 4 at 12 p.m. The Tribe improved to 2-1 for the season with the win.

Sierra Poske and Sasha Kulikova teamed up for the only Demon Deacon doubles win, defeating Klaudyna Kasztelaniec and Ragini Acharya 8-6.

Kulikova then tied the overall match score at 1-1 with a straight set win over No. 83 Katarina Zoricic (6-2, 6-2) at No. 2.
