COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Gina LaMandre, the only softball coach in University of Maryland history, Monday announced her resignation after 11 seasons in order to pursue other opportunities.

Named head coach prior to the 1995 season, when Maryland added softball as a varsity sport, LaMandre compiled a record of 338-263 during her tenure on the College Park campus. She was named ACC Coach of the Year in 1999 when she led the Terps to the NCAA regional finals and an overall record of 51-23.

Prior to her arrival in College Park, LaMandre was an assistant coach at Massachusetts for eight seasons. She was a two-time All-America pitcher at Trenton State (now College of New Jersey).

"We appreciate all of Gina's efforts over the past 11 years in building the Maryland softball program," said Dave Haglund, associate athletic director. "The program has enjoyed many successes during her tenure as head coach, and we wish her the best in the future."

Said LaMandre, "I would like to thank the athletes that I have had the opportunity to coach. It has been a privilege and an honor to be a part of their lives. I wish them the best in all their future endeavors."

Haglund announced that a national search for LaMandre's successor will begin immediately.
