PHILADELPHIA - Terp junior softball hurler Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and senior centerfielder Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) were recognized as members of the 2001 Louisville Slugger All Mid-Atlantic Region team, released late Tuesday. Bettker's first-team nod and Burrell's second-team distinction are the first all-region accolades for both. Each first and second-team selection is eligible for All-America honors, to be announced May 21 and 22.

Bettker put forth a stellar junior season in 2001, leading the Terrapin pitching staff with a 16-7 (.696) record and 168.1 innings pitched. Her 1.12 ERA ranked fifth in the ACC, while she also listed third in strikeouts (6.86 per game), fourth in shutouts (8), fifth in opponent batting average (.180) and second in saves (3). Her 2-1 record and tournament-high 24.0 innings at the ACC Championships earned Bettker all-tournament honors.

A 2001 All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament selection, Burrell picks up the all-region award after leading her squad with a .320 batting average, 34 runs, 19 doubles and seven stolen bases. Her average at the plate rated ninth in the conference, while her doubles total led the league and set a new single-season Terrapin mark. Perfect in her stolen base attempts, Burrell tied the all-time career total of 25. She drove in 20 runs and contributed a .443 slugging percentage as the Terps' leadoff hitter.

The accolades mark the 10th and 11th time a Terrapin has been listed on regional All-America teams.
