Florida State Downs Georgia Tech at 2004 ACC Softball Championship

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Top-seeded Florida State pounded out 11 hits en route to defeating fourth-seeded Georgia Tech 3-2 at the 2004 ACC Softball Championship, being held at the Seminole Softball Complex on the campus of Florida State University. Georgia Tech got off to an early lead, posting one run in the top of the first inning. Junior Katie Donovan walked before senior Tara Knudsen reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second, sending Donovan home on the play. Florida State senior Elisa Vasquez tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning with her second homer of the season, a solo blast over the left field wall. The Seminoles increased their lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third after junior Tatiana George singled to bring home junior Lesley Palmer's pinch runner, sophomore Carey Galuppi. Florida State extended its lead to 3-1 when freshman LaShaun Davis scored with two outs in the fourth inning. Georgia Tech cut its deficit to 3-2 in the seventh inning when junior Kirin Kumar singled to center field to score sophomore Amy Hosier. Florida State center fielder Jessica van der Linden fielded the ball and threw it to catcher Elisa Vasquez in time to tag senior Sara Wissmann at home plate and end the game. The Seminoles advance to face the winner of tonight's North Carolina/Maryland game on Saturday, May 15 at 3:00 pm. The Yellow Jackets will face Virginia at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 15.
Florida State scored three runs, on 11 hits and committed two errors, while Georgia Tech tallied two runs on three hits and had one error.
