Georgia Tech Drops NC State in Opening Game of 2004 ACC Softball Championship

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Georgia Tech senior Soraya Reddick hit the game-winning home run in the fifth inning, as the fourth-seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the fifth-seeded NC State Wolfpack 2-1 in the first game of the 2004 ACC Softball Championship, being held at the Seminole Softball Complex on the campus of Florida State University. The Yellow Jackets broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning after senior Tara Knudsen walked with two outs and then stole second base. Junior Liz Bartle drove Knudsen home with a two-out single to center field. Reddick then drilled a solo home run, her fifth of the season, over the left field wall to extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth. NC State capitalized on a Tech error in the sixth inning as freshman Jennifer Chamberlin drove in the first Wolfpack run of the game, cutting their deficit to 2-1. With runners at first and second and no outs, junior pitcher Jessica Sallinger got freshman Miranda Ervin to fly out and struck out the final NC State batter of the inning. The Yellow Jackets would go on to collect the 2-1 victory and advance to face the top-seeded Florida State Seminoles at 5:00 pm today, while NC State will face the loser of today's fourth game on Saturday, May 15 at 12:30 pm.
Georgia Tech broke the single-season walks record, pushing its season total to 200. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs, on six hits and committed two errors, while NC State tallied one run, on three hits and had one error.
