Bracket Set for 2011 #ACCSoft Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. - With regular season play completed Sunday, the bracket for the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship is set. The three-day event begins Friday, May 13, and concludes Sunday, May 15. Georgia Tech, which will host the event at Mewborn Field in Atlanta, enters the championship as the No. 1 seed after wrapping up its third consecutive regular season title and fourth overall.

Sunday's championship game will be televised on the league's regional sports network. The Yellow Jackets, which were predicted to finish first by the league's head coaches in the preseason, wrapped up conference play with an 18-2 record and a 44-9 overall mark. Georgia Tech is currently ranked in both national polls, coming in at No. 17 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll and No. 19 in the USA Today/NFCA Poll. The Yellow Jackets will face eighth-seeded Virginia (23-30, 5-14 ACC) at 5 p.m. on Friday. Georgia Tech will be seeking its third-straight tournament championship and fifth overall. Virginia aims to win a second title and first since 1994. The Yellow Jackets won both games in the series against the Cavaliers during the regular season.
North Carolina claimed the No. 2 seed at the championship and will meet seventh-seeded Boston College Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Tar Heels (32-20, 13-7 ACC) look to clinch their second overall championship and first since 2001. North Carolina won both games in the regular series matchup with the Eagles (15-30, 5-13 ACC). Boston College seeks its first title since joining the league in 2006.
Maryland earned the No. 3 seed after finishing the regular season 12-7 in the conference and 38-16 overall. The Terrapins will take on sixth-seeded NC State in the first game Friday, which is scheduled for Noon. Maryland split the regular season series with the Wolfpack (26-22, 7-12). The Terrapins are seeking their second championship after clinching a share of the title in 1997. NC State won its sole tournament crown in 2006.
Florida State enters the tournament as the fourth seed and will face fifth-seeded Virginia Tech Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Seminoles concluded the regular season 9-11 in conference play and 27-26 overall. The Hokies (37-19, 9-12 ACC) claimed the regular season series, taking two of three. Florida State has won a league-leading nine tournament titles with the last coming in 2004, while Virginia Tech claimed its two championships back-to-back in 2007 and 2008.
