GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher and Boston College's Gemma Ypparila have been chosen as the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for the period ending on Sunday, May 4. Tincher, the 2007 ACC Pitcher of the Year, has now been named Pitcher of the Week four times this season. A senior native of Eagle Rock, Va., Tincher was dominant in a single start last week against East Carolina. In just five innings, the ACC's career wins leader struck out 15 batters on her way the 13th no-hitter of her career. In leading the Hokies to their 41st win of the season, Tincher surpassed the 2,000 career strikeout mark, becoming one of just three student-athletes in NCAA history to do so. She is now 30-6 in the circle this season with a 0.56 ERA and an NCAA-best 532 strikeouts. Ypparila, a freshman infielder/designated player for the Eagles, batted .400 for BC last week with two huge games in the regular season-ending series against Maryland. In Saturday's double-header with the Terrapins, the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native was a combined 4-for-6, with a home run in each game, as BC prevailed 5-2 and then 3-1. In the series, she batted .571, scored two runs with four RBIs, and recorded a walk, as the Eagles jumped the Terps for the sixth-seed in this week's ACC Softball Championship. On the horizon for both teams this week is the first-round of the 2008 ACC Softball Championship, which will be held on the campus of the University of Maryland. BC will open the tournament at 10:00 a.m. this Thursday, May 8, against third-seeded Florida State. Maryland will take on No. 2 seed Virginia Tech at 12:30 p.m. in opening round action. Both contests will be webcast live on ACC Select.
