Seeds Set for 1999 ACC Softball Tournament
May 4, 1999 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The seedings for the 1999 ACC Softball Championship, to be held at Florida State from May 14-16, have been determined. This year's No. 1 seed is claimed by Maryland. The Terrapins will head into the championship with a 6-2 ACC record. The No. 2 seed Florida State, who also enters the championship with a 6-2 record, but takes the second seed after all tie breaking procedures were exhausted and a blind draw was performed. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds were also determined by a blind draw and the draw left North Carolina as the No. 3 seed (4-4 ACC), and Virginia (4-4 ACC) as the No. 4 seed. Georgia Tech finished the ACC regular season with an 0-8 record and will be the No. 5 seeded team. The first game of the 1999 ACC Championship will be held Friday, May 14 at 3:00 p.m. and will feature fourth-seeded Virginia against fifth-seeded Georgia Tech. In other ACC softball news, Virginia's Meaghan Young is tabbed this week's ACC Player of the Week. Young, a sophomore from Shrewsburg, Mass. went 6 for 12 on the week charting a .500 batting average. The rightfielder also recorded two runs, two RBI's, as well as a double and a triple. Young also lead the team at the plate by hitting safely in all four contests. Kelly Shipman is this week's ACC Pitcher of the Week after throwing three complete games for a 3-0 record. On the week, the senior righthander threw 21 strikeouts and gave up only six walks. Shipman also allowed only 11 hits on two earned runs. Against George Mason, Shipman recorded her 11th shutout of the season. The Huntingtown, Md. native also increased her career strikeout number to 993 and pitched a career long 13 innings against No. 23 South Florida.
