Shipman Selected ACC Softball Pitcher of the Week

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Kelly Shipman (Huntingtown, Md.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference softball Pitcher of the Week or the second consecutive week and fourth time this season it was announced today. She earned three victories, including two against ACC rival North Carolina, as she upped her season victory total to a school record-tying 22 during the week of April 12-18.

Shipman is tied for first in the ACC and tied for seventh in the nation with 22 victories. She has a record of 22-10. Shipman also won 22 games during the 1996 season and has won 76 games during her career.

The right hander gained victories over UNC Charlotte (2-1, April 16) and North Carolina (9-3 and 5-4, April 18) last week. She threw three complete games including two against the Tar Heels in back-to-back games of a doubleheader. During the week she had an earned run average of 1.33. She struck out 11 in her three wins last season and has recorded a school-record 943 career strikeouts.

Maryland will play a pair of doubleheaders this week as they play host to La Salle Thursday and travel to Virginia on Saturday. Maryland is currently in first place in the ACC and has recorded the most wins (38) of any conference team this season. The 38 wins is a school record for the Terps program.
