Georgia Tech's Shimandle and North Carolina's Norris Earn ACC Weekly Softball Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech outfielder Blair Shimandle and North Carolina pitcher Lisa Norris have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 13-19. The duo led their respective teams to a pair of sweeps in conference play last weekend.

Shimandle, a senior from LeGrange, Ga., hit 11-for-13 on the week to claim ACC Player of the Week honors. The Yellow Jacket centerfielder raised her season average to .329 by hitting .846 last week. She scored eight runs and posted five RBIs and two doubles en route to a 4-0 week. She was also 1-for-2 in stolen base attempts and extended her consecutive errorless games streak to 136.

Norris, a senior from Snellville, Ga. went 3-0 last week to earn the ACC Pitcher of the Week accolade. Norris pitched 20.0 innings and held opposing batters to a .136 average while not allowing an earned run. She fanned 23 batters allowing just one unearned run to help North Carolina down Virginia Tech twice and Winthrop once.

No. 21 Georgia Tech will host No. 7/6 Alabama on Wednesday before welcoming No. 13/15 to Atlanta. The Tar Heels will host East Carolina and Charlotte before visiting Atlanta this weekend.

The 2009 ACC Softball Championship starts on Friday, May 8 and runs through the 10th. NC State will host this year’s championship at the Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Stadium in Raleigh. For more information, please visit www.theACC.com.
