Shannon Bustillos, Lori Spingola, and Kendra Knight Earn ACC Softball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland freshman catcher Shannon Bustillos has been named the ACC Softball Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. North Carolina sophomore Lori Spingola and Maryland senior Kendra Knight have been named the Co-Pitchers of the Week. It is the fourth award of the season for Spingola, and the second for Knight and Bustillos.
Bustillos led Maryland’s offense this week by hitting .571 with seven RBIs and two home runs in a three-game sweep of Virginia. In Saturday’s first game, the Anaheim, Calif., native connected on a two-run shot to center to give the Terrapins a 3-0 lead. Bustillos knocked in the go-ahead run in Saturday’s second game, and then hit a three-run home run on Sunday.
Spingola went 3-0 last week with a win at UNC Greensboro and two against NC State. The Atlanta, Ga., native threw 20.0 innings with only one earned run allowed and struck out 25, and went the distance in all three games. On Sunday, she pitched all 10 innings as the Tar Heels picked up a 3-2 victory. Spingola improved to 23-7 with a 1.87 ERA and a conference-leading 235 strikeouts.
Knight gave the Terrapins two dominating starts and three strong appearances this weekend in a three-game sweep of Virginia. The Virginia Beach, Va., native allowed just one run and eight hits over 17.0 innings of work, and threw a one-hitter in Sunday’s finale. She struck out 22 compared to eight walks allowed. The Cavaliers hit .140 against Knight as she posted an ERA of 0.40 for the week.
