GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher and Charisse Mariconda have been chosen as the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for the period ending on Sunday, April 6. Tincher, a senior, and Mariconda, a junior, led the Hokies to a three game sweep of ACC rival Virginia last week to move the club to 10-2 in league play this season.
A native of Eagle Rock, Va., Tincher earned victories on the mound in each of the Hokies' three games last weekend. In a 4-0 win on Friday, she pitched the complete seven innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 14. Then in Saturday's double-header with the Wahoos, Tincher tossed a combined 10.2 innings, again giving up just one total hit and zero runs. For the week, she pitched 17.2 innings, allowed two hits and zero runs, and struck out 40 batters.
Mariconda, who hails from Hollywood, Fla., posted a .714 batting average in seven at-bats against Virginia over the weekend, reaching base in all three games. In Friday's matchup, she registered two hits, including a triple, two RBIs and scored one run as the Hokies picked up their eighth ACC win of the season. She then was perfect in the series' final game, picking up three more hits in three at-bats to go along with three RBIs and two runs-scored in a 7-1 Tech win. Mariconda was 5-for-7 with six RBIs, three runs-scored and her third home run of the season in the series.
The Hokies, who currently own second-place in the ACC standings, host a double-header with Longwood this Wednesday, and then travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., for a three-game series with Boston College on Saturday and Sunday of this weekend.
