![]() NC State Uses Long Ball To Down North Carolina, 2-0
May 12, 2005
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- NC State used a pair of solo home runs by Miranda Ervin and Jen Chamberlin and a complete game shutout by pitcher Abbie Sims to down North Carolina 2-0 in the first game of the 2005 ACC Softball Tournament at the Terrapin Softball Complex on the campus of the University of Maryland. Ervin broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of fourth inning sending a Crystal Cox 3-2 delivery over the left field wall for a solo shot and a Wolfpack 1-0 lead. North Carolina threatened in the top of the fifth as Erica Ennis just missed tying the game as she hit a double off the top of the left field wall to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Julia Bove moved pinch runner Ashley Oxendine to third with one out, NC State's Sims settled down to strike out the next two batters to end the Tar Heel threat. Chamberlin added to the Wolfpack lead in the sixth as she hit her 11th home run of the season. She sent the first pitch over the left field fence for a 2-0 Wolfpack advantage. Sims earned the win in the circle for NC State registering her ninth shut out of the season, allowing just two hits while striking out ten Tar Heel batters. NC State will advance to play top-seeded Georgia Tech at 7:30 pm tonight in the final game on day one of competition at the ACC Softball Championship. North Carolina will next play on Friday, May 13 at 5:00 pm.
