ATLANTA - No. 24 South Florida ripped 20 hits, including seven for extra bases, to defeat Georgia Tech, 8-4 & 3-2, in South Atlantic Alliance softball Sunday at Glenn Field. The Bulls moved to 44-26 overall, 6-6 SAA on the year, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 21-36 overall, 1-11 SAA for the year.

In the first game, South Florida scored on a Tech fielding error in the top of the second inning before Jacket catcher Anne Knobbe singled up the middle in the bottom of the third to plate second baseman Susanne Miller to tie the game. The Bulls scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by center fielder Janeen Sobush. South Florida broke the game open in the sixth when pitcher Monica Triner hit a bases-loaded double to score three runs and third baseman Ginny Georgantas followed with a two-run home run. Tech plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Miller and third baseman Jamie Frost each had RBI singles, and a Bull error after a successful double steal allowed the third marker. Triner, a 1998 first team NFCA all-American, picked up the win to move to 23-13 on the season. Pitcher Mimi Utt suffered the loss despite yielding just six hits to fall to 12-25.

In the second contest, first baseman Amanda Whitesell hit a home run to lead off the second inning and then delivered the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to carry the Bulls to a 3-2 win. Tech answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning as shortstop Ellen Styer had a RBI double and center fielder Heather Sumrow delivered a RBI single. South Florida tied the game in the fourth inning after a throwing error by Knobbe allowed pinch runner Alana Hazzard to score from third after a stolen base. In the fifth, Triner singled and Georgantas followed with a double to set up Whitesells sacrifice fly. Triner, who started the second game for USF, handcuffed the Jackets over the last five innings on four hits, including none in the sixth and seventh innings. She moved to 24-13 with the win. Jamie Smith pitched the distance for Tech and fell to 8-10 overall, as she allowed just two earned runs and struck out four USF batters.

Tech is next in action May 14-16 in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. The Jackets, who are the No. 5 seed, will face No. 4 seed Virginia on Friday to kickoff the tournament at 3 p.m.
