May 10, 2009
RALEIGH, N.C. (theACC.com) - For the third time in school history, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are Champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference in softball. Georgia Tech took a 3-1 win over Florida State in the title game held at NC State's Dail Softball Stadium. The top seeded Yellow Jackets improve to 43-13 on the year while the Seminoles' 14-game winning streak was snapped as Florida State falls to 43-14. "Our defense did a great job today," said Georgia Tech Head Coach Sharon Perkins. "Adkins hit all her spots well today and that really helps your defense out. This is only my third season here and I'm really proud of these girls." Georgia Tech didn't waste time by touching up the Seminoles for three runs in the first inning. Whitney Haller's single pushed two runs across while Georgia Tech's starting pitcher and ACC Championship MVP Kristen Adkins' RBI single which accounted for the third run. The Seminoles responded by bringing ACC Pitcher of the Year Sarah Hamilton in from the bullpen. Hamilton got the Seminoles out of the jam and scattered four hits over the final five and two-thirds. Down to their final three outs Florida State's Carly Wynn plated Courtney Rosen to put the Seminoles on the board. Florida State would load the bases but were eliminated on a game-ending double play. Adkins went the distance in the circle and earned the win to improve to 23-7 on the year. She allowed the one run off eight hits while striking out two. Florida State's starting pitcher Terese Gober pitched only a third of an inning and allowed three runs off three hits. She falls to 24-9 with the loss. The league's teams now await the NCAA Championship Selection show which will be broadcast on Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. on ESPNU.
