Georgia Tech Edges Virginia, 7-0 In ACC Softball Championship Quarterfinal
May 8, 2009 RALEIGH, N.C. (theACC.com) – Top seeded Georgia Tech rolled to a 7-0 victory over No. 8 seed Virginia in the quarterfinals of the 2009 ACC Softball Championship at NC State’s Dail Softball Stadium. With the win over the Cavaliers, the Yellow Jackets will advance to Saturday’s second semifinal and face the winner of Friday’s final game between Virginia Tech and Maryland.
The Yellow Jackets improve to 41-13 with the victory while the Cavaliers fall to 25-22 with the loss. ACC Freshman of the Year Kelsi Weseman hit a two-run home run in the first inning that gave the Yellow Jackets the lead that they would not be challenged. Whitney Haller led the way for Georgia Tech going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double and a single. Kristen Adkins was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Second baseman Jen Yee was plated by Weseman’s home run and went 2-for-4 at the dish. Adkins got the start in the circle and went six innings allowing only three hits while holding Virginia scoreless. She struck out three and walked two to earn the victory to improve to 22-7. Stephanie Coates pitched the seventh inning for Georgia Tech and recorded two strikeouts. Virginia’s Karla Wilburn went five allowing all seven runs off ten hits. She took the loss to fall to 17-12.
