CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia softball team dropped a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference games to Florida State Wednesday afternoon, May 3, at The Park in Charlottesville. The Seminoles won the first game 3-2, then took the nightcap 6-2. With the wins, Florida State improves to 46-25 overall and 4-2 in the ACC. UVa concludes the 2000 season with a 27-38 overall record and a 3-5 mark in the ACC.

In the first game, the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Fourth-year left fielder Jen Krill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington) led off the inning with a double and then first-year pinch runner Katie Weinberg (Reston, Va./South Lakes) scored on first-year shortstop Johanna Kaiser's (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) double to left. The Seminoles scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Brandi Stuart led off the inning with a single and stole second and third base with one out. Becky Wallace then reached on an error that plated Stuart. A single by Andi Lyons moved Wallace to second. Teresa Edenfield then delivered the game-winning runs with a two-run double to left. UVa added a single run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 3-2. First-year catcher Stephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley. Calif./Mount Miguel) singled to drive in first-year pinch runner Britt Gore (Vienna, Va./James Madison) for Virginia's second run of the game with just one out. UVa left to tying run on third base as the last two batters of the inning struck out.

Leslie Malerich, who beat Virginia twice on Monday in the ACC Championship, earned the win for Florida State. Malerich (31-14) gave up five hits and only one earned run while striking out five and walking four. Fourth-year starter Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) took the loss for the 'Hoos. She allowed six hits in a complete-game effort. Zagol (9-12) gave up only two earned runs and struck out three while walking four.

In the nightcap, the Seminoles scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break open a close game and went on to a 6-2 victory. FSU's Jennifer White-Stokes held UVa to four hits in picking up her 12th victory against eight losses. Brandi Stuart led Florida State offensively with a 4-for4 effort at the plate and also scored two runs.

White-Stokes allowed only two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts and one walk. Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) took the loss for Virginia. Quinn (12-13) gave up six runs, three of which were earned, on 10 hits. She struck out four and walked two in her final collegiate appearance.

Florida State grabbed a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first. Serita Brooks singled to right with one out and stole second. She scored when Stuart's single to left field got by Krill. In the fourth inning, FSU increased its lead to 2-0 when Stuart scored on a throwing error by the UVa's Calhoun. The Cavaliers narrowed the deficit to 2-1 with an unearned run in the fifth inning. With one out, Calhoun singled to left, but was forced out at second on a fielder's choice grounder by fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata). Good moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Krill's single to center field. The 'Noles broke the game open in the seventh. Brooks plated the first run with a sacrifice bunt. Kimmy Carter's sacrifice fly scored the second run and Natalie Bennett drove in the third run with a ground out to second base. In the bottom of the seventh, UVa scored its second run of the game. Fourth-year third baseman Karen Breshears (Camarillo, Calif./Cornerstone Christian) led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on Calhoun's fly out to right. Breshears then scored on Good's sacrifice fly to left field to make the final score 6-2.
