Virginia Tech sweeps Liberty, 10-3 and 4-3

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Behind 14 runs and 26 hits on the day, the Virginia Tech softball team continued its recent winning ways Thursday, sweeping Liberty 10-3 and 4-3 at Liberty Softball Field.

In the first game, the Hokies fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but came back with two runs of their own in the third inning. Jenna Rhodes scored on Jessica Everhart’s single up the middle and a bloop single to left by Beth Walker plated Charisse Mariconda.

In the sixth, Kristen Froehlich connected on her first-collegiate home run, a three-run shot to left field that made it 5-1. Walker led off with a single through the left side and then came around to third base on Kristin Graham’s double to the gap. After a failed suicide squeeze in which Froehlich fouled off the bunt, she atoned for the mistake and blasted a shot to deep left field.

In the second game, the Hokies struck for three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Graham singled to shallow center to drive in Everhart. With the bases loaded, Amber Walker reached on an error that allowed two runs to cross the plate.

After Liberty scored two runs in the fourth inning, the Hokies got yet another unearned to make it 4-2. Graham missed on a suicide squeeze, leaving Everhart out to dry. But the throw down was dropped and trickled into left field to allow Everhart to scamper home.

The Flames made it interesting in the seventh inning, scoring a run with two outs to make it a one-run game. With the winning run at the plate, Roark induced a groundout to allow the Hokies to pull a Houdini and escape Lynchburg with the sweep.

Walk Off Home Run Gives Softball 7-6 Win Over Harvard

The Boston College softball team (15-24, 1-8 ACC) defeated Harvard, 7-6, after a walk-off home run by Alison Kooistra broke a tie game with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Eagles had to rally from an early deficit, as Harvard took a commanding 5-0 lead by the middle of the third inning.

The Crimson got things going off of BC starting pitcher Morgan Kidd in the top of the second inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, Harvard hit back-to-back doubles to take a 3-0 lead.
