Tech Softball Swept by Samford
March 23, 1999 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Georgia Tech dropped a doubleheader to Samford Tuesday in collegiate softball after a nine-day layoff from final winter examinations, losing the first game 4-1 and the nightcap 3-2. The Yellow Jackets fell to 14-16 overall, while Bulldogs improved to 10-17 on the season. In the first game, Samford center fielder Juliet Shunnarah knocked a solo homerun in the first inning and right fielder Janet Middleton followed with one in the third inning to help the Bulldogs grab the 4-1 victory. Samford scored two runs in the second inning on a Tech error and a RBI single by left fielder Jennifer Silinsky. Tech had seven hits in the game, and scored in the sixth when Bulldog shortstop Katie Jones mishandled designated player Beth Warrens ground ball to allow left fielder Kori Jacobson to score. Thirdbase man Jamie Frost went 2-for-3 with a double and second baseman Erin Hawley went 2-for-2 in her first game back after appendicitis surgery. Freshman Mimi Utt suffered the loss for Tech and fell to 8-9 on the year. In the second game, Samford rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to capture the win. The Bulldogs grabbed the first lead of the game in the second inning on an RBI single by second baseman Amanda Haugh, and Tech responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Right fielder Susanne Miller started that half of the frame with a single and two batters later, center fielder Lauren Schwartz followed with a single. Miller took third on the play a relay throw by Samford went into Techs dugout, scoring Miller and giving Schwartz third base. Jacobson followed with an RBI groundout on the next play to give Tech a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs were able to load the bases on two straight singles, a fielders choice and a hit batsman. First baseman Kelly King and Silinsky followed with RBI singles to push the Bulldogs ahead 3-2. Hawley singled for Tech in the top of the seventh, but the Jackets were not able to mount a scoring threat. Hawley went 2-for-4 and Warren went 3-for-3 to lead the Tech attack. Junior pitcher Jamie Smith took the loss to drop her record to 5-7 on the year. Tech is back in action Wednesday as it hosts Northwestern in a 4 p.m., game at Glenn Field.
