Terps Win Two at FSU Invitational
March 12, 1999 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Home runs and pitching powered the Maryland Terrapins on Friday as the Terps won both games on opening day at the Tallahassee Democrat Florida State Invitational. Maryland used a pair of home runs to defeat Georgia Southern 5-3 during afternoon action, and senior pitcher Kelly Shipman shackled Iowa State 3-0 in the nightcap. Shipman, earning her seventh victory of the season, scattered six hits as her Maryland teammates used six hits of their own to outscore the Cyclones. Amy Sandler had a double for the Terps and Jen Potzman collected all three Maryland RBI as the Terps scored once in the third inning and twice more in the fifth for the win. In the Terps' first game of the day, Maryland rallied to score four late runs to upend Georgia Southern, 5-3. Amanda Bettker earned her sixth win of the season while allowing three runs on four hits, but it was the bats of Cortney Madea and Shelley Burrell that provided the difference. After the Eagles struck for two runs in the bottom of the first, Maryland scored a run in the second before taking a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Terps added two insurance runs in the sixth and held on for the win. Madea tripled for Maryland and Burrell added a pair of home runs.
