Tech Softball Falls at ECU, 3-2

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Georgia Tech's softball team had a five-game winning streak snapped Sunday as it lost to host East Carolina, 3-2, in the semifinals of Pirate Classic Softball Tournament in Greenville, N.C. Tech fell to 9-7 overall, while the Pirates improved to 6-4 with the win.

Tech jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as left fielder Heather Sumrow stole home plate on double steal after center fielder Lauren Schwartz stole second base. Right fielder Kori Jacobson followed with an RBI single to plate Schwartz and stake Tech to a 2-0 lead. East Carolina reached starting pitcher Mimi Utt in the bottom of the fifth inning, with a bases on balls, a sacrifice and five consecutive singles to plate three runs. The Jackets stranded runners on first and third in the top of the seventh as Pirate pitcher Denise Reagan struck out Jacobson to end the contest. Utt, who had recorded two victories during tournament play, including a victory against the Pirates, fell to 6-3 with the loss. Schwartz, a junior from Atlanta, led Tech at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Tech is back in action Wednesday at Mercer in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
