Tech Softball Tops Miami of Ohio, 5-3
February 21, 1999 TAMPA, Fla. - Georgia Tech finished the USF-Gladstones Tournament Sunday with a 5-3 victory over Miami of Ohio in Tampa, Fla. The Yellow Jackets went 2-3 in the tournament and are now 5-6 overall, while Miami lost all five of its contests to start the year 0-5. Freshman pitcher Mimi Utt (Carson City, Nev.) pitched out of trouble most of the afternoon to improve her record to 4-2 for the year. She yielded eight hits and only two earned runs and stranded 12 Redhawk base runners. She coaxed a pop up and groundout to leave the bases loaded in the third inning and stranded a pair of base runners in both the fifth and sixth innings. Tech used a five-run second inning to post all the runs it would need to capture the win. Left fielder Heather Sumrow and center fielder Lauren Schwartz each delivered RBI singles during the inning and catcher Anne Knobbe capped the rally with a two-RBI single. Sumrow paced Tech with two hits, a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI, and seven different batters contributed to Techs eight hits. Right fielder Cory Jacobson singled in the fourth inning to move her hitting streak to eight straight games, while Knobbe safely hit in her sixth consecutive contest. Tech is next in action Friday-Sunday at the East Carolina Tournament in Greenville, N.C. Miami, Ohio 011 010 0 -- 3 8 2 Georgia Tech 050 000 x -- 5 8 2
