November 12, 1998 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Defending ACC and regular season conference champion North Carolina, with seven highlighted athletes, leads the 1998 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Teams, as selected by the league's eight head coaches. Maryland followed with five selections to the all-conference squad, while Clemson and Virginia had three each and Duke and Wake Forest had two each.
The Top Picks North Carolina's Cindy Parlow was tabbed as the 1998 ACC Player of the Year, while Wake Forest freshman Emily Taggart garnered ACC Rookie of the Year recognition. Demon Deacon head coach Tony da Luz was selected the ACC Coach of the Year. Parlow, a four-time first-team All-ACC selection, currently leads the Tar Heels this year in goals with 18, points with 44 and game-winning goals with six. A senior forward from Memphis, Tenn., she enters the ACC Tournament ranked sixth on the league's career charts in goals scored, assists and points with 65 goals and 50 assists for 180 points. Taggart, a second-team All-ACC selection at the midfield position, tallied six goals and two assists in her rookie season. With her three-goal performance against NC State earlier this season, the Pleasanton, Calif., product became just the third player in Wake Forest history to record a hat trick. Now in his second season at Wake Forest, da Luz has guided the Demon Deacons to their most successful season in conference play as the team wrapped up the regular season with a school-best 4-3 league record and a fourth place league finish after finishing seventh in each of the last four seasons. Under his direction, Wake Forest has posted a 23-13-3 record.
A Look at the First Team Four other Tar Heels join Parlow on the first-team All-Conference list, led by three-time All-ACC midfielder Laurie Schwoy. A first-team All-America selection in both 1996 and 1997, Schwoy is North Carolina's second-leading scorer this year with 30 points. Defender Lorrie Fair earned her second straight first-team All-ACC selection after leading the ACC and ranking among the national leaders in assists with 15. Midfielder Rebekah McDowell, who tallied four goals and 11 assists for 19 points this year, and goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, who ranks second in the NCAA in goals against average with a 0.35 average, both received their first All-ACC selection. Clemson's Sara Burkett is the first Tiger player to be named first-team All-ACC in all four years. She became Clemson's all-time leader in points this season, now boasting 37 goals and 35 assists for 109 points. Teammate Sheri Bueter earned her third all-conference honor, including her first selection to the first-team, after tallying four goals and 11 assists for 19 points. Two of Maryland's tri-captains, Keri Sarver and Abby Bausman, garnered first-team honors after helping lead the Terrapins to a 10-9-1 record for the 1998 regular season. Sarver enters the ACC Tournament as the seventh all-time leading scorer in ACC history, and the Terps' career leader, with 147 points. A three-year starter on the defensive unit, Bausman tied her career-high with three assists in 1998. Rounding out the first-team picks are Virginia's Angela Hucles and Duke's Kristy Whelchel. A three-time first-team selection, Hucles broke Virginia's scoring record with a school-high 47 goals and 13 assists for 107 points.
