![]() ACC Leads All Conferences With Eight Teams in 2007 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship
Nov. 12, 2007
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference leads all conferences in both the number of teams participating (eight) and teams garnering national seeds (four), as the NCAA announced its selections for the 2007 Women's Soccer Championship today. In addition, the eight teams tie the conference record set in 2004. The Tar Heels collect a No. 1 seed for the fifth year in a row and the 18th time. North Carolina and the University of Connecticut are the only two teams who have been invited to the tournament every year since its inception in 1982. The other three ACC schools collecting a national seed in this year's national tournament include No. 3 Florida State and No. 4 Virginia and Wake Forest. In addition, the ACC will have four teams hosting first- and second-rounds in Boston College, North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia. All eight teams participating in this past week's ACC Women's Soccer Championship at Disney's Wide World of Sports® Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., earned a spot in the national tournament. North Carolina, which clinched the ACC Championship title for the 19th time, received the league's automatic bid, while Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Miami, Virginia and Wake Forest picked up at-large berths. Seven of the eight teams (Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest) are back in the national postseason event this year. Miami makes its first appearance since joining the ACC in 2004-05. Six teams will represent the Southeastern Conference and five teams advanced from the Big 12 Conference, the Big Ten Conference, and Big East Conference. Four teams enter the tournament from the Pac-10 and three teams from the Colonial Athletic Association and West Coast Conference. First-round matches will be played Friday, November 16, at campus sites, and second-round matches will be played Sunday, November 18, at the same campus sites. The two first-round contests hosted by Texas A&M will be played Thursday, November 15 with the second-round game to be played Saturday, November 17. Third-round games will be played at on-campus sites November 23, 24 or 25. Quarterfinal matches will be played November 30, December 1 or 2 at on-campus sites as well. Times will be announced. The 26th annual NCAA Division I Women's College Cup will be played December 7 and 9 at Aggie Soccer Stadium in College Station, Texas. Texas A&M will serve as host.
