GREENSBORO, N.C. - Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina leads a field of eight league teams that have been selected to compete in the 2008 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament.

It marks the second straight year the ACC has placed eight teams among the 64-team field, and a record six will compete as national seeds. North Carolina received a No. 1 seeding, while Florida State and Virginia were awarded No. 2 seeds. No. 3 seeds went to Boston College, Duke and Wake Forest.

ACC Championship runner-up Virginia Tech and Miami round out the ACC's representation in this year's tournament, which gets under way Friday with opening-round games at campus sites. North Carolina, Boston College, Duke, Virginia and Wake Forest will be host schools for the first two rounds.

The ACC champion Tar Heels (19-1-2) will be the top-seeded team in the North Carolina Regional and will play host to Western Carolina (16-4-3) in the opening round.

Two ACC teams were placed in the Notre Dame Region, where Florida State will be seeded second and Boston College third. FSU (14-2-3) will face Mississippi Valley (9-10) in Friday's opening round at Auburn, while BC (13-5-2) will play host to Central Connecticut State (12-6-4).

Wake Forest (12-7) drew the No. 3 seed in the Stanford Regional and an opening-round home game against Morehead State (10-8-2). Virginia (13-4-3), seeded No. 2 in the UCLA Regional, drew a home game against Army (12-5-2), while Duke (12-5-3) is seeded third in the UCLA Regional and will play host to Radford (14-1-6).

Virginia Tech (10-8-4) was also placed in the UCLA Regional and travels to BYU (17-5) in the opening round. Miami (10-8-4) was placed in the North Carolina Regional and will face in-state foe Central Florida (13-5-1) in first-round play at Gainesville, Fla.

The NCAA appearance will be the 27th straight for the North Carolina, which will be seeking its 19th national title. The Tar Heels' last NCAA championship came in 2006. Florida State will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament field for the ninth time and gunning for its fourth straight appearance in the Women's College Cup.

This year marks the 21st NCAA appearance by Virginia, the 15th by Duke, the 13th for Wake Forest and the 12th by Boston College. Miami will be appearing for the third time (and for the second straight year), and Virginia Tech for the second time (and the first since 2004).

The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be played on Friday and Sunday at campus sites. The third and fourth rounds will be held each of the following two weekends (also at campus sites), with the four regional winners advancing to the 2008 Women's College Cup at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., on Dec. 5-7.
