![]() 2007 All-ACC Women's Soccer Accolades Announced
Nov. 6, 2007 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Twenty-three student-athletes from nine Atlantic Coast Conference schools highlight the 2007 All-ACC Women's Soccer Teams, as announced Tuesday. Virginia totaled five all-conference selections to lead the league, as the ACC Women's Soccer Championship gets underway this week in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Wake Forest placed four on the team, while defending champion North Carolina and Clemson each had three. Duke, Miami and Florida State each landed a pair of all-leaguers and NC State and Virginia Tech rounded out the All-ACC contingent with one apiece. Boston College and Virginia Tech each received two picks on the 2007 All-ACC Freshmen Team to led all schools. Four rookies were also represented on the All-ACC Team, as Miami's Brittney Steinbruch and Virginia's Sinead Farrelly notched first-team recognition while Amanda DaCosta of Florida State and Marika Gray from Virginia Tech were named to the second unit. Duke, Maryland, North Carolina and Wake Forest received one nod apiece to complete the 11-member squad. For three of the four individual award recipients, the league accolade is a first for Florida State's Mami Yamaguchi and Miami's Brittney Steinbruch and head coach Tricia Taliaferro. Leading the ACC and her team with 19 goals and 46 points, Yamaguchi has been recognized the ACC Offensive Player of the Year. The junior from Tokyo, Japan, spearheads a Florida State offense that has posted 58 goals and totaled 162 points for nine points per game. this season. The midfielder also stands second in the league with 73 shots and tied for second with five game-winning goals on the year. The only ACC player to collect three hat tricks this year, Yamaguchi became the first Seminole to be tabbed for the top offensive honor. Virginia's Becky Sauerbrunn has been named ACC Defensive Player of the Year. The junior from Dublin, Ohio, has played an integral part of a defensive unit that has registered 13 shutouts, including six in ACC play, resulting in 11 victories, two draws and two losses in 2007. The Cavaliers, who finished league play in fourth place with 18 points, have outscored their opponents 36-6 this year. Sauerbrunn is the second Cavalier to earn the league's defensive award, Steinbruch, one of the ACC's top two offensive powers this year, has been selected ACC Freshman of the Year. A native of Wyckoff, N.J., the forward paces the league and her team in shots (110) and game-winning goals (6) and stands second among conference leaders with 16 goals and 35 points. The rookie sensation was one of two student-athletes from the ACC in 2007 to be named National Player of the Week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, earning the recognition on October 1. Collecting her first league coaching accolade, Miami head coach Tricia Taliaferro has been voted ACC Coach of the Year by her peers. Picked in the preseason poll to finish last in the ACC race, the Hurricanes proved to be a solid contender under Taliaferro in 2007. Miami tied for fifth place in the conference regular-season standings with a 4-4-2 record for 14 points, and earned the No. 5 seed over Boston College in this week's Championship.
