CARY, N.C. - The Virginia Cavaliers used a goal and an assist from both Jen Redmond and Sarah Huffman to defeat Wake Forest 2-1 in the first round of the 2005 ACC Women's Soccer Championship.

The Cavaliers struck first as freshman Jen Redmond tallied her third goal of the season, one-timing a shot from 10 yards out for her first career ACC tournament goal at 14:39 in the first half. Huffman and Shannon Foley were credited with assists on the play giving Virginia an early 1-0 lead.

Virginia would extend its lead to 2-0 as Redmond fed a pass through the center of the box to Huffman, who tapped it past the Demon Deacon keeper for her third goal of the season. Kelly Hammond was also credited with an assist on the play.

The two-goal Cavalier lead was short lived as Wake Forest would counter 20 seconds later with its first goal of the afternoon at the 55:40 mark in the second half. Kristen Kemp started the play as she sent the ball into the box where Jayme Leigh Cargnoni deflected the ball off her chest to Elizabeth Remy. Remy one-timed the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards out to cut the Virginia lead to 2-1.

Wake Forest keeper Kaitlyn Doe registered five saves, while Christina de Vries made four stops in net for the Cavaliers.

The win moves Virginia to 14-4-1 on the season and into the semifinals where they will face the winner of the Florida State/Clemson match-up on Friday, November 4 at 7:30 pm. With the loss, Wake Forest falls to 9-8-1 on the season.
