Virginia's Lenczyk, BC's Mastroianni named ACC Women's Soccer Co-Players of the Week
Sept. 30, 2008 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia forward Meghan Lenczyk and Boston College goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Co-Players of the Week for Sept. 30. Both players helped their teams go unbeaten on the road against fellow ACC ranked teams in games played last Thursday and Sunday. Lenczyk scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over eighth-ranked Florida State and the go-ahead goal in a 2-0 win over 25th-ranked Miami. The McLean, Va., sophomore headed in her goal against FSU with just over 13 minutes remaining in the match. That score was all the 13th- ranked Cavaliers needed as the defense posted its fifth shutout of the season to secure the victory. Virginia (8-1-1, 2-0) has seen Lenczyk score the game-winning goal in each of its last four wins. Her eight goals so far this season are already two more than she had all of last season. Mastroianni helped BC go 1-0-1 against two higher ranked teams. The Durham, Conn., freshman matched her career high with eight saves as the 14th-ranked Eagles tied ninth-ranked Duke 0-0. She added a pair of key saves in Sunday's 1-0 win at 12th-ranked Wake Forest, a team that entered the match on a four-game winning streak. Mastroianni stifled a shot from close range in the first half and stopped another strong try from 16 yards out in the second period as the Eagles improved to 7-1-2 overall. ACC women's soccer action continues in full force on Thursday night as Miami visits Boston College, NC State travels to Virginia, Clemson plays host to Virginia Tech, and Florida State plays at Maryland. All of those matches are set for 7 p.m. starts. Duke plays host to North Carolina in an 8 p.m. match.
The 7 p.m. matches will all be available for viewing via the web on ACC Select, and the Duke-North Carolina match will be televised nationally by the Fox Soccer Channel.
