Boston College's Mewis Named ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sept. 28, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Boston College sophomore midfielder Kristen Mewis has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to a pair of conference road wins, including a historic moment in the program's history.
The Eagles defeated then top-ranked and two-time defending NCAA champion North Carolina by a 3-2 score last Thursday night as Mewis scored the game-tying goal and then assisted on the game-winner in the second half. It marked BC's first win over UNC in 12 matches and the first time BC had defeated a team ranked No. 1 nationally.
Mewis then scored the game-winning goal in the Eagles' 1-0 victory at NC State on Sunday. It was the Hanson, Mass., native's second game-winning goal of the season and the first first-half goal allowed by the Wolfpack in 2010. Mewis is in the midst of an eight-game point scoring streak, which ties the Boston College record set by Kia McNeill in 2006. Mewis ranks second among BC players in scoring this season with six goals and eight assists for 20 points.
Mewis' strong efforts vaulted BC (9-0-1) to the No. 1 spot in this week's Soccer America and Top Drawer Soccer polls, which are additional program firsts. Mewis was named the National Primetime Player of the Week by CollegeSoccer360.com and earned a spot on Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week, along with National Co-Players of the Week Rachel Nuzzolese and Katie Stengel of Wake Forest.
ACC action picks back up on Thursday night and features another showdown of top 10 teams as No. 5 Maryland plays host to No. 6 Virginia. Wake Forest, ranked 25th by Soccer America, travels to 10th-ranked Florida State. Friday's schedule finds No. 3 North Carolina at NC State, and Clemson playing host to Miami.
