Virginia's Miller Named ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sept. 27, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia junior forward Caroline Miller has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week after her golden goal in the 105th minute lifted the 14th-ranked Cavaliers to their first ever victory over North Carolina.
On the first shot of the second overtime of Sunday’s nationally-televised match against the fifth-ranked Tar Heels, Virginia scored the game-winner as Morgan Brian played a ball behind the defense that found the run of Miller, who fired it into the corner of the net for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
In addition to lifting Virginia to its first win over UNC in 38 matches, Miller’s score gave the Cavaliers their first road win vs. a top 5 opponent in 12 years (a 2-0 win at No. 4 Portland in 1999).
Miller, of Rockville, Md., became the second-fastest Cavalier to score 10 goals in a season (11 games), just behind Angela Hucles in 1997 (scored her 10th goal of the season in the ninth game of the season).
