Wake Forest's Stengel Named ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sept. 20, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest forward Katie Stengel has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Demon Deacons to an unbeaten week that included a home-field win over third-ranked Florida State in their ACC opener and a road victory at South Carolina.
The Melbourne, Fla., sophomore, who leads the ACC with 11 goals already this season, almost single-handedly led the Demon Deacons past the Seminoles in Thursday night’s regionally-televised game, scoring both goals in the 2-0 win to give Wake its highest-ranked victory since 2004. She followed it up with a goal in the 2-0 win at South Carolina to extend her point-scoring streak to five games.
Stengel’s 11 goals through the first nine games put her only five shy of the Wake Forest single-season record of 16 goals that she set last year as a freshman.
