Wake Forest's Stengel named ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sept. 7, 2010
GREENSBORO. N.C (theACC.com) – Wake Forest freshman forward Katie Stengel has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. Stengel led the Demon Deacons to the title of last weekend’s ACC/SEC Challenge, which included Virginia Tech, LSU and Kentucky.
Stengel, a forward from Melbourne, Fla., scored the game-winning goal in both of the 17th-ranked Demon Deacons’ matches vs. SEC opponents. After LSU had scored against the Deacons in the 74th minute to tie Friday night’s game at 1-1, Stengel answered back for Wake Forest less than two minutes later, running onto a through ball from Rachel Nuzzolese on the right side of the box and perfectly chipping a shot over the charging LSU keeper and into the goal to put the Demon Deacons ahead 2-1. Wake Forest went on to post a 3-1 win.
Stengel scored the first goal for the Deacons on Sunday against Kentucky, corralling the rebound from Jackie Logue’s shot off the crossbar, and calmly shooting it into the net to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead. The Deacons went on to post a 2-0 win. Stengel currently ranks second on the team with three goals and seven points. In addition to the ACC Player of the Week honors, Stengel was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week and earned All-Tournament honors at the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The ACC’s full slate of non-conference action continues this week with 22 matches scheduled. Action resumes with a pair of matches involving top-10 teams on Wednesday night, as No. 5 Boston College plays host to Brown, and No. 8 Maryland travels to Seton Hall.
