Even TS Hanna Can't Stop Pack's Vera In Win over VCU

RALEIGH, N.C. – Not even the rain from Tropical Storm Hanna could slow down NC State All-ACC forward Lindsay Vera from scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth in Friday’s second game of the NC State/Residence Inn North Women’s Soccer Tournament.

NC State (4-0) had a relatively quiet attack going in the first half with only a pair of shots towards net until Vera struck suddenly in the 39th minute with her fourth goal in the last two games.

Redmond Scores Twice As Duke Downs Kentucky, 3-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The ninth-ranked Duke women’s soccer team opened the Nike Carolina Classic on Friday with a 3-1 victory over Kentucky (1-2), which was played at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The two squads kicked off the match with cloudy skies and some light rain and finished with a steady shower as tropical storm Hanna approached the area on Friday. The Blue Devils got on the board in the first 10 minutes of the contest as senior Kelly McCann played a ball down the right corner to sophomore Marybeth Kreger, who sent a perfect cross to junior KayAnne Gummersall. Gummersall, a native of Wilmette, Ill., leaped towards the ball and sent a shot off her hip into the left corner of the net for her third goal of the season.

Caroline Walden Leads BC Women's Soccer To Victory

Senior Caroline Walden scored one goal and had two assists to lead No. 13 Boston College to a 3-0 victory over Brown University (1-0) tonight in a non-conference game. BC is now 3-1-0 and will host the University of Toledo on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.

Walden got the Eagles on the board at 30:48. Walden received the ball from senior Caitlin Hiler off a corner kick. Walden took one dribble and struck the ball low and to the near post by a diving Brown goalkeeper Brenna Hogue (12 saves). It was Walden's first goal of the season.

Cavaliers Top Georgia 1-0 in Road Opener

ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team remained unbeaten on the season, topping Georgia 1-0 in its first road game of the season. The Cavaliers used a second half goal by Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) to down the No. 22 Bulldogs and improve to 4-0-0 on the year.

In the first half, the Cavaliers dominated play but couldn’t turn that field position advantage into one on the scoreboard. Virginia outshot Georgia 10-2 before the half and had a 9-2 corner kick edge, but the closest the Cavaliers came was in the 24th minute when Sinead Farrelly’s (Havertown, Pa.) blast from outside the area rattled the crossbar.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior forward Kaila Sciascia scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the University of Maryland women's soccer team a 1-1 tie with American Friday evening at Ludwig Field.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute when forward Kelsey Brasher tallied her fourth goal of the season on a 30-yard blast from the left side of the pitch. Notre Dame Shuts Out Tar Heels 1-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A goal by Brittany Bock in the 51st minute was all the scoring in the match as No. 5 Notre Dame held off No. 3 North Carolina Friday night at the Nike Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill before a crowd of 2,085 fans on a rain-soaked night.

Bock scored from 30 yards out on a long curving shot into the upper left corner of the goal at 50:21 of match. UNC goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough had to come out of her penalty area to clear a ball on what was quickly becoming a Fighting Irish breakaway. Bock recovered the ball on the far sideline from the grandstand, took a couple of dribbles and launched a shot that hit the upper left 90 of the frame. Rodenbough had quickly retreated to her line but there would have been little she could have done with a shot hit with such precision.

Tech falls to Texas A&M 3-1

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the No. 11 Aggies of Texas A&M Friday night in the second game of the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational. No. 17 Wake Forest knocked off George Washington, 2-0, in the opening match of the tournament.

The Hokies looked to use the momentum garnered from last weekend’s two victories against Evansville and George Mason to challenge perennial power A&M. Coming into 2008, the Aggies have won four consecutive Big 12 regular season titles and are currently ranked 11th in the nation according to the NSCAA/adidas poll.
