CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Soccer star Mia Hamm will sign copies of her book for the public from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 2 in the Bull's Head Bookshop at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The UNC alumna, a star of the U.S. women's soccer team that won the World Cup on July 10, is not expected to make a public address during the appearance on behalf of her 1998 book, "Go for the Goal," said Pamela Pfeifer of HarperCollins, which published the book.

Bull's Head manager Erica Eisdorfer had been requesting a visit by Hamm since before the book came out, she said: "Every week I would call them and say, 'Please!' They would say, 'We can't get hold of her because she's playing soccer.' As it turns out, this is the only place she would go. She wanted to come to her alma mater."

Hamm, an assistant women's soccer coach at UNC, starred on Carolina's team from 1989-93, winning four NCAA championships with the Tar Heels. She holds the world record for goals with 111. Her excellence has brought her endorsement deals with Nike, Pepsi, Gatorade and Pert Shampoo, among others.

The public may park in the Swain and Hanes visitor lots off Cameron Avenue or the N.C. 54 visitor lot east of Raleigh Road. For more information, call the bookshop at (919) 962-5060.
