CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia women's soccer team has announced their 2003 schedule. The Cavaliers will play a challenging schedule in the upcoming season, with 15 of their 18 regular season opponents having played in last season's NCAA Tournament. Nine of the 18 contests, including four ACC games, will be played at Klöckner Stadium.

"We always try and put together a schedule that will be challenging for our program and exciting for our fans," said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. "We are anxious for the season to begin and look forward to testing ourselves against some of the top teams in the nation."

Prior to the start of the 2003 season, the Cavaliers will play a pair of exhibition games in Michigan. Virginia will play Oakland on August 20 in Traverse City and visit Michigan State on August 22 in exhibition contests.

The Cavaliers will officially open the 2003 season the following weekend at home. The opening match of the season is August 30, as the Cavaliers host West Virginia at Klöckner Stadium in a rematch of a NCAA Tournament second round game last season. The season-opening homestand concludes on September 2 as William & Mary visits Klöckner.

Virginia will travel to the state of Ohio the following weekend for a pair of games. On September 5, the Cavaliers will be in Columbus for a game against Ohio State before traveling to Dayton for a game on September 7. That contest will be a rematch of a NCAA Tournament first round game last season.

Klöckner Stadium is the site of one of the nation's best in-season tournaments the following weekend, as Virginia hosts the 2003 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. This year's event features two 2002 NCAA College Cup participants, Penn State and national runner-up Santa Clara. Perennial top 25 team Southern California rounds out the field. The Cavaliers will play Santa Clara on September 12 and Southern California on September 14.

The following weekend, the Cavaliers will continue with tournament play, as they travel to Hanover, N.H. for the Dartmouth adidas/Hypertherm Tournament. Virginia will play the host Big Green on September 19 and fellow Ivy League power Harvard on September 21. Virginia's season-long four game road trip continues the following week as the Cavalier kick off the 2003 ACC schedule on September 26 at N.C. State before concluding the trip on September 29 at Richmond.

The month of October opens as Virginia has its ACC home opener on October 4 against Florida State. After an October 7 trip to James Madison, Virginia hosts another two ACC foes at Klöckner Stadium, Wake Forest on October 11 and Maryland on October 14. Virginia visits Duke on October 18 before returning to Charlottesville for the final homestand of the year. On October 21 the Cavaliers host Liberty and on October 26, the Cavaliers conclude their home schedule with defending ACC Champion North Carolina. The 2003 regular season concludes on November 1 as Virginia visits Clemson.

The 2003 ACC Tournament will take place November 6-9 in Cary, N.C. at the SAS Soccer Park, home of the WUSA's Carolina Courage. The stadium will also be the site of the 2003 Women's College Cup December 5-7 after the first four rounds of the 2003 NCAA Tournament take place on campus sites from November 14-30.
