Tar Heels Add Two To Soccer Recruiting Class
June 15, 2004 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina finished off its 2004 women's soccer recruiting Tuesday with the announcement that Catie Winslow and Kim Coates will join the defending NCAA champion Tar Heel team this fall. UNC will welcome nine new players in 2004-05, although two will defer enrollment until January 2005. Coach Anson Dorrance's team is coming off a 27-0 campaign in 2003 but lost five senior starters off that team. Winslow is a 5-3 midfielder from Greensboro, N.C. and the younger sister of Tar Heel senior defender Laura Winslow. Catie plays her club soccer for the Greensboro Twisters. She was a member of the State Olympic Development Team in 2000 and 2001 and an All-State midfielder selection in 2003. Coates is a transfer to Carolina from Louisburg College where she played soccer from 2002-04, captaining the team both years. Louisburg won Region X championships both seasons she played there. Coates is a native of New Kent, Va. and she graduated from New Kent High School in 2002. She played four years of varsity soccer there as a forward, leading the squad to two district titles. She also played club soccer for the Richmond Strikers for three years as a center midfielder. Winslow and Coates join seven prospective student-athletes who were announced in February. They include forward Jaime Gilbert (North Andover, Mass.), defender Julie Yates (Winston-Salem, N.C.), defender Robyn Gayle (Mississauga, Ontario), goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris (Satellite Beach, Fla.), defender Katie Brooks (Winchester, Mass.), defender Ariel Harris (Holly Springs, N.C.) and midfielder Mary Hinkle (Winston-Salem, N.C.).
Gayle and Ashlyn Harris will defer enrollment to Carolina until January 2005 so they can compete in the 2004 Under 19 World Championships in November 2004.
