U.S. Women's National Team to Train at Klockner Stadium
June 8, 2005 CHARLOTTESVILLE - The United States Women's National Team will train at Klockner Stadium on the grounds of the University of Virginia from June 19-23 in preparation for a match against Canada on June 26 in Virginia Beach. It will mark the second time in the past three years the women's national team has trained at Klockner, as it held a pre-World Cup training camp at UVa in September of 2003. National Team Head Coach Greg Ryan has called 24 players to the training camp. Ten of those players were members of last year's Olympic gold medal winning team, including former UVa All-American Angela Hucles, the Cavaliers' all-time leading scorer. "We are excited about the U.S. Women's National Team coming back to Charlottesville and the University of Virginia to prepare for its game against Canada," said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. "The last time we hosted the team prior to the Women's World Cup in 2003, I think we helped provide an ideal training environment for the team and we aim to do the same thing this time around. This is a great opportunity for our entire soccer community in Charlottesville to support our National Team and one of our very own in Angela Hucles." Practices each day will be open to the public. The practice schedule will be announced closer to the team's arrival in Charlottesville. "When the situation dictated that we needed a place to train prior to going into Virginia Beach, I immediately thought of UVa," said Ryan. "The team really enjoyed training there prior to the 2003 Women's World Cup and the set-up and environment is perfect for a short training camp. Everyone at Virginia has always been very accommodating and helpful, the fields are in great shape, and we are looking forward to our stay and some excellent training." After training in Charlottesville, the team will travel to Virginia Beach where it will play Canada on June 26 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Gametime is 3:00 p.m. and the game will be televised live on ESPN2. Tickets for the game are available at Ticketmaster locations throughout Virginia.
