UNC Announces 2000 Women's Soccer Schedule

June 6, 2000

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Eight home games and two trips to the Lone Star State highlight the 2000 schedule for the University of North Carolina women's soccer team. Coach Anson Dorrance's team, which went 24-2-0 last season and won the NCAA championship, will return nine starters to face a challenging schedule that begins with a pair of exhibition games at home before a trip to central Texas for a pair of games to open the regular season.

UNC, which has won an amazing 16 national championships since 1981, will play Minnesota August 18 and Richmond August 20 in exhibition matches to tune up for the regular season. Carolina will then jet to Austin to open the regular season on August 25 against the Texas Longhorns. Two days later the Heels will play at Texas A&M.

Carolina will then return to Chapel Hill for a four-game homestand. The regular season home opener comes against Virginia on September 1 at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Heels then host Tennessee on September 3. A week later, the Heels will home the Nike/Carolina Classic with Carolina and neighboring Duke alternating opponents South Carolina and Oregon on September 8 and 10.

After a midweek trip to 1999 NCAA quarterfinalist Clemson, the Heels will be off to Houston, Texas for a weekend tournament where Carolina will play against 1999 NCAA semifinalist Penn State and Southern Methodist. The following weekend, UNC will return the favor from earlier in the season by playing in the annual tournament at Duke as the Blue Devils and Tar Heels alternate opponents TCU and William & Mary.

Carolina will then have 12 days off before attacking the remainder of their regular season, playing five successive Atlantic Coast Conference opponents from October 11-29.

The 13th annual ACC Tournament will be at Duke University with quarterfinals on November 2, semifinals on November 3 and the championhips game on November 5. UNC has won every ACC Tournament championship since 1989. The NCAA Championships, the 19th annual event for women's soccer, will begin with first round games on November 8. The semifinals and finals will be played December 1 and 3 at San Jose State University.
