Marion Jones Returns To Fetzer Saturday
May 18, 2001 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Marion Jones, the nation's greatest female track and field athlete, will take part in the pre-game ceremonies of the Carolina Courage-Washington Freedom soccer match Saturday, May 19th at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Jones shone at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, garnering 3 gold and 2 bronze medals, the most medals by a female track and field athlete in Olympic history. The two-time 100 meter world champion returns to Fetzer Field and Irwin Belk track, the site that launched her record-setting track career. While attending the University of North Carolina, Jones also played point guard on the women's basketball team and led the Tar Heels to the 1994 NCAA Championship. Marion Jones, who will be appearing on behalf of the upcoming Goodwill Games, will perform the honorary coin toss at the beginning of the game, which will be televised nationally on TNT at 12:00 pm. The Goodwill Games air on TNT, August 29 - September 9. Jones will be accompanied by her youth basketball team, Michigan of the Apex Park and Recreation Basketball League. "I am looking forward to bringing the girls basketball team I coach to see their hometown WUSA team play," said Jones. "These are some of the best athletes in the world and great role models on what hard work and dedication can do for you."
