Women's Soccer Closes Spring Season With ACC Spring Tourney Championship
May 11, 2004 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team ended the 2003 season with a 2-1 loss against UNC Greensboro back on Nov. 14 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. As the final whistle sounded, the Deacs had four freshman and two sophomores on the field. Clearly, the future is bright for Wake Forest. Well, that future was on hand throughout the spring season as the Deacs not only went unbeaten, but they also captured the ACC Spring Tournament. The Deacs knocked off West Virginia and UNCG -- each of which played in the NCAA Tournament. Then, the Demon Deacons set its sights on the Spring ACC Tournament. Wake Forest defeated Clemson, Maryland and Duke -- all of which reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago and beat the Deacs. "The spring season really answers a lot of questions about some kids that might be on the bubble coming off the fall," Demon Deacon head coach Tony Da Luz said. They get to play in a lot of games and get a chance to assert and improve themselves on the field -- especially if they did not get much of a chance in the fall. Most of the kids did that. They really, really turned it up and took advantage of the opportunities they got." Wake Forest opened the spring in Austin, Texas with a 3-0 shutout over the 1987 ODP Regional III Team. Sarah Kozey and Elizabeth Remy teamed up for the first goal. Then, departing seniors' Alena Thom and Katherine Winstead added the next two goals. The Demon Deacons then faced off against the Baylor Bears. The Deacs came out on top with a tough 1-0 victory. Kristin Kemp assisted Kozey on the game's only goal. Wake Forest returned home for a trio of matches against some top quality club teams. The Deacs played Reston Football Club Milan. The Deacs found themselves down 2-1, but goals from Kozey and Remy secured the victory. The Deacs returned and thumped CASL 1986, 4-0. Kozey netted a pair of goals, while Remy added a goal and two assists. Winstead and Thom registered the final two scores. Wake Forest closed the weekend with a 2-1 triumph over Twin City Soccer Club. Kozey and Remy capped off their stellar weekend with a goal apiece. The Demon Deacons then participated in the Mountain State Tournament. Wake Forest faced West Virginia and blanked the Big East Champions, 2-0. Winstead and Remy provided all the offense. The Demon Deacons followed up that performance with another shutout victory over the Greenville Football Club. Wake Forest used a goal from Remy to secure the win. The Deacs closed the spring season with matches against CASL and UNCG, before heading to Cary to play in the ACC Spring Tournament. Wake Forest downed CASL, 4-0, for the second time this spring. Remy had two goals and two assists, while Kemp and Winstead also tallied goals. The Demon Deacons then evoked a little bit of revenge against the Spartans of UNC Greensboro. Wake Forest shutout UNCG, 2-0, on a pair of goals from Kozey. Despite two games the previous day and a 5:00 am departure, the Deacs opened the ACC Spring Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Clemson. The Demon Deacons took advantage of three first-half goals from Kaitlyn Doe, Keisha Garrick and Kozey. Remy and Taylor Toombs each added an assist. The Deacs then played Maryland -- a team that rattled the Demon Deacons 5-1 in the 2003 regular season. Wake Forest hit the post three times throughout the game. With the game tied, the two went into penalty kicks. Wake Forest edged the Terps, 3-2, on successful attempts from Remy, Tracie Abbott and Toombs. Wake Forest made it three-for-three with a 3-1 victory over Duke. The Blue Devils edged the Deacs 1-0 in the fall, but two goals from Toombs and another from Remy were too much for Duke to overcome.
