Wake Forest defeated VCU on Saturday 1-0 at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest had a difficult time penetrating through a very clogged midfield in the first of four 30-minute periods but found some space down the left side to score the winner early in the second period. Laura Colven slipped a pass up the left sideline to Elizabeth Remy who scorched her defender and served a great left cross to find Megan Upchurch waiting at the far post to volley home the winning goal. It was the second consecutive weekend Remy and Upchurch have connected for a quality goal.

Wake Forest controlled the game for long stretches but VCU came on strong in the third and fourth periods pressing to equalize. The Wake defensive effort led again by Kaitlyn Doe in goal and Kristina Hanley at centerback stood strong and produced a fourth consecutive shutout. Keisha Garrick, Nikki Lecznar, Christie Carter, Amanda Lebo, Ashley Burney and Erin Baldwin have all made solid defensive contributions to sustain this long stretch of shutout minutes.

VCU was tough and physical giving Wake all we could handle. This game will be perfect preparation for our spring season finale on Tuesday night at 7pm vs. the TASC U-16 boys Classic team coached by Skip Thorp. Competing against the quicker and stronger boys will be a great challenge for our team.
