CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament quarterfinals for the 17th straight year on Friday night as the Tar Heels defeated seventh-ranked William & Mary before 2,562 fans at Fetzer Field.

The win in the NCAA Tournament third round game improved Carolina to 23-0-0 on the season while the Tribe ended its campaign with a record of 17-3-2. The Tar Heels will play host to an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game next Friday, Saturday or Sunday in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels will play host to the winner of the NCAA third round game between Georgia and Dartmouth, which will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.

Sophomore forward Raven McDonald scored her second successive game-winning goal in the NCAA Tournament Friday night as she scored 19:57 into the game, rebounding in a shot by sophomore forward Meredith Florance which was knocked by Tribe goalkeeper Michelle Horbaly off the cross bar. McDonald also scored the game-winning goal in UNC's 6-0 victory over UNC-Charlotte last Saturday in the NCAA Tournament second round.

William & Mary limited the Carolina scoring chances however and the Tar Heels were not able to gain any breathing room until the final 18 minutes of the match. Junior midfielder Beth Sheppard came off the bench to score Carolina's second goal at 72:38, assisted by senior forward Rakel Karvelsson and junior midfielder Laurie Schwoy. Florance then added an insurance goal at the 87:39 mark, taking passes from junior midfielder Rebekah McDowell and Schwoy before scorching a 20-yard shot into the upper left corner of the Tribe goal.

Carolina recorded 23 shots on goal in the game to only one by William & Mary. Michelle Horbaly had a fine outing in the net for the Tribe, making nine saves.

The victory pushed UNC's winning streak to 44 games over the past two years and its unbeaten streak to 68 games over the last three years.

QUOTES FROM WILLIAM & MARY

William & Mary Coach John Daly:
"We were looking to keep the game tight and try to go for it in the last 20 minutes. The second goal came at the worst possible moment."

"Our defense held strong for the first 60 minutes. We knew we were going to have to concede some ground because they have some really explosive players, but I thought we defended well."

"We weren't looking for 10 or 12 shots. We wanted three or four and wanted to make a couple of them count."

William & Mary forward Missy Wycinsky:

On only getting one shot (as a team)
"I don't think that's indicative of the chances we got. We just never got the last piece of the puzzle, but that is not indicative of our attacking scheme."

On the Carolina tradition of dominance:
"It's an amazing feat, but it gets old. It's frustrating. There's so much parity, but they get there (the Final Four or National Championship) every year."

QUOTES FROM NORTH CAROLINA

Quotes from North Carolina Head Coach Anson Dorrance:
"William and Mary was very well organized defensively. The score doesn't show it, but the game was close. They were the best heading team we have played all season. Usually we dominate in the air, but this game was definitely 50-50."

On the play of Siri Mullinix:
"The box score says that Siri didn't have one save, but she was a major factor in this game. Her saves usually don't come off of shots, they come off of through balls and other tough situations. She has improved every year and she is playing exceptionally well."

On the seven Offside calls against William and Mary:
"We do not play a trap. We try to compress space. We keep a shape with out back three and try to take advantage of three of our greatest qualities. The first is Siri Mullinix, the second is our back three, and the third is the play of Rebekah McDowell. She has a work rate that is second to no one in the world."

Raven McDonald on her two goals in this year's NCAA tournament:
"Both were the same type goals. Both came off a header or a direct shot. Anson always says that for every eight times you crash in on the keeper, you'll score once. I just trust in him and keep going. "
