Nov. 16, 2008
Five ACC teams advanced to the NCAA Round of 16. The league is guaranteed at least two teams in the NCAA Quarterfinals since four teams meet in two of this round's matches: Florida State and Boston College will meet and Virginia will face Duke. North Carolina will play Illinois. North Carolina Shuts Down Charlotte To Advance To NCAA Round of 16 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina women's soccer team, the top seed in its part of the bracket in the 2008 NCAA College Cup, benefitted from a pair of goals by freshman forward Courtney Jones and used a stellar defensive effort as the Tar Heels defeated Atlantic-10 Conference champion Charlotte 4-0 in the NCAA Round of 32 at sun-drenched Fetzer Field Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels, now 21-1-2 on the season, will meet Illinois (11-8-2) next Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Fetzer Field in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Jones scored twice for the Tar Heels and senior midfielder Allie Long also scored a goal in the shutout win over the 49ers. The win marked UNC's second triumph over Charlotte this season. The Tar Heels also beat the 49ers 5-1 in the season opener for both teams at Fetzer Field on August 22. Long scored two goals in that game and Jones also scored once so the two players combined to score six of the nine goals UNC tallied against the 49ers this season. The 49ers saw their 15-match winning streak end at the hands of the Tar Heels. Charlotte, which finished its record-setting campaign at 18-4-1, had not lost since a 5-1 setback against Virginia Tech on September 14, 2008. Florida State Advances To The Round of 16 With 1-0 Victory Over Auburn AUBURN, Ala. - Behind a goal by Jessica Price, Florida State (16-2-3) advanced to the third round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Auburn (12-9-2) on a cold, brisk afternoon in Auburn, Ala. Price was responsible for the only goal on Sunday as the red-shirt freshman found the back of the net in the 39th minute to extend the Seminoles unbeaten streak to 12 games (10-0-2).
The win over Auburn was the eighth straight victory in the series for the Seminoles while it marked the fourth time that Florida State has eliminated the Tigers from the NCAA Tournament in nine postseason appearances. Three of those four victories have all come in the second round. Florida State advances to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and for the seventh time since 2000. BC Women's Soccer Advances to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament The No. 10 Boston College women's soccer scored three first half goals and never looked back as the Eagles defeated Northeastern, 4-0, in the second round off the NCAA Tournament at the Newton Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. Boston College (15-5-2) will now advance to the round of 16 next weekend and play ACC foe Florida State. The Eagles have advanced to the round of 16, four times in the last five years. This is the fifth time the program has advanced to the Sweet 16. Freshman forward Stephanie Wirth scored her second goal in two games for the Eagles. Wirth one-timed a pass from Hannah Cerrone to the left of the Northeastern goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon to give BC a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of the game. Caldwell started the play when she found Cerrone streaking down the sideline. Cavaliers Down West Virginia 3-2 in NCAA Second Round CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team used three first half goals to top West Virginia 3-2 in a NCAA Tournament second round game at Klöckner Stadium Sunday afternoon. Virginia held off a second half rally by the Mountaineers and advance to the round of 16 for the fourth consecutive season. The Cavaliers (15-4-3), the No. 2 seed in the UCLA region, took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of play on the first shot of the game for either side. Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.) sent a corner kick that Alli Fries (Dublin, Ohio) headed in for her fourth goal of the season. The assist was Alwine’s 14th of the season, tying the school record for assists in a season set by Sarah Huffman in 2004. Virginia held that one-goal lead until late in the first half when they added a pair of goals under a minute apart. In the 44th minute, Sarah Senty (Arlington, Va.) played a ball through to Maggie Kistner (St. Louis, Mo.). Kistner beat the charging keeper to the ball and dribbled around her. She took a shot from almost no angle at the end line towards the empty net that hit the inside of the far post and rolled into the goal. Just 46 seconds later, the Cavaliers struck again. Kistner sent a cross to Alwine at the top of the penalty area. Alwine headed the ball into space and then chipped a 25-yard shot over the keeper who had come forward to try to make a play on the loose ball. Duke Women's Soccer Advances To NCAA Round of 16 With 1-0 Win DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University junior KayAnne Gummersall tallied a goal in the seventh minute and the 15th-ranked and third-seeded Blue Devils held off William & Mary to score a 1-0 victory in the second round of the NCAA Women’s College Cup. The Blue Devils advance to the round of 16 against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rival Virginia next weekend. Duke pushes its record to 14-5-3 overall as it moves into the third round for the second consecutive season. Virginia awaits the Blue Devils after getting past West Virginia, 3-2, in its second round contest. Duke and the Cavaliers battled to a 0-0 tie during the regular season. The game date and time is yet to be determined. The Blue Devils came out fast and hard in the opening 45 minutes. Looking for that early goal again, they got into the attack quickly and created an outstanding opportunity just over three minutes into the game. Senior Kelly Hathorn took the ball on the left flank and served it to sophomore Marybeth Kreger in the penalty area. Kreger, who is from Noblesville, Ind., got two shots off as William & Mary denied the first attempt and Kreger’s rebound skipped wide of the net. No. 23 Wake Forest Drops 1-0 Decision to James Madison in NCAA Second Round WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Lindsay Bowers' header goal in the 82nd minute lifted James Madison (14-6-2) to a 1-0 victory over No. 23 Wake Forest (13-8-0) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest controlled most of the game, outshooting the Dukes 16-9, although JMU had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Deacons took seven corner kicks while James Madison attempted three corners. With the game scoreless in the 82nd minute, Teresa Rynier of James Madison attempted a corner kick. Her kick found the head of Yolam Anderson-Golhor. Anderson-Golhor flicked the ball on to Bowers who headed the ball into the left side of the net.
