No. 1 Seed FSU Beats Southeastern Louisiana, 4-1 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The fifth-ranked Florida State soccer team opened the 2009 NCAA Tournament with a 4-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana Friday night at home. Boasting the first No. 1 seed in program history, the Seminoles (17-4-1) moved to an impressive 16-0-0 all-time at home in postseason play. FSU has also now won its last 16 home games dating back to last season as the team advanced out of the first round for the ninth time in 10 postseason tries as a program. Jessica Price's fourth multi-goal game of the season helped propel an FSU team that was unlike anything the Lions (13-5-2) had seen all season. BC Women's Soccer Advances with a 1-0 win over Harvard Junior Amy Caldwell scored 33 seconds into the second half to lift Boston College to a 1-0 win over Harvard (9-7-1) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in front of 820 fans at the Newton Soccer Field. Boston College is now 16-3-2 on the season and will play Connecticut on Sunday, November 15 at 1 p.m. Connecticut defeated Boston University, 1-0, in double-overtime in the second match on Friday night. Caldwell converted on a cross from Victoria DiMartino at 45:33 in the second half. Junior Brooke Knowlton started the play when she found DiMartino in the box to the right of the Harvard goalkeeper Lauren Mann. DiMartino slid the ball to the far post where Caldwell one-time a low shot into the near post for the 1-0 lead. No. 4 Terps Advance Over Monmouth, 4-0 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 4-seed University of Maryland women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 rout of Monmouth Friday night at Ludwig Field. Maryland, which out-shot the Hawks 23-5 for the game, got on the board in the 10th minute for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore forward Jasmyne Spencer was pulled down in the Monmouth box, giving Maryland a penalty kick. Hawk goalkeeper Lia Fierro stopped the PK, but redshirt-sophomore Mallory Baker put in her own rebound for the goal. No. 14 Wake Forest Downs Kennesaw State 2-0 in NCAA Tournament First Round WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior midfielder Casey Luckhurst scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead No. 14 Wake Forest to a 2-0 win against Kennesaw State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday evening at Spry Stadium. Playing in her 47th career game, Luckhurst found the back of the net for the first two times as a Demon Deacon. She staked Wake Forest to an early advantage with a goal in the third minute and then doubled the margin with her second tally in the 15th minute. Hokies top Murray State 2-0, earn first Tournament victory DAYTON, Ohio - The No. 17 Hokies claimed their first NCAA Tournament victory in program history as they took down Murray State, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday evening. This is just the third post season win (including conference tournaments) for the Hokies in three appearances and the first time they have ever advanced to the second round of the Tournament. Juniors Marika Gray and Jennifer Harvey were the goal scorers in the match, each netting the first postseason goals of their careers while sophomore keeper Kristin Carden earned her second shutout of this year's postseason and her first ever in the Tournament. Carolina Women's Soccer Team Advances To NCAA Second Round CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The third-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team outshot Big South Conference champion High Point 31-0 in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament but it took a goal in the 68th minute by Tar Heel freshman midfielder Lucy Bronze to allow UNC to advance to the second round of the tournament Sunday after the Tar Heels beat the Panthers 1-0 at Fetzer Field. High Point's Marisa Abbott made 14 saves to lead the Panthers as she stopped the Tar Heels repeatedly when the cross bar and the posts were not. Carolina hit the post once and the cross bar twice and another four shots were blocked by the Panthers' defense. Ironically, it was a shot off the right post in the 68th minute that led to the goal that allowed the Tar Heels (18-3-1) to advance past the Panthers (7-15-2). Cavaliers Advance Over St. John’s in Penalty Kicks UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Virginia women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a penalty kick shootout victory over St. John’s following a 0-0 tie Friday night at Jeffrey Field. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves in the shootout, while the Cavaliers made all three of their kicks to advance 3-1. The Cavaliers had the better of chances in the first half, outshooting the Red Storm 14-3 before the break. However, Virginia couldn’t take advantage of that edge, and the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes. The second half saw the Cavalier pressure continue, but once again Virginia couldn’t convert. The best chance came in the 78th minute when Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) hit the underside of the crossbar with her volley attempt. Despite outshooting St. John’s 30-4 over the first 90 minutes, but the game remained scoreless after regulation. Duke Women's Soccer Falls, 2-0, to No. 12 Rutgers in NCAAs COLUMBIA, S.C.-- On a beautiful Friday afternoon in Columbia, S.C., the Duke women's soccer team saw its 2009 season come to an end, falling to the 12th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Scarlet Knights took the first shot of the match, but the first real opportunity presented itself to the Blue Devils, as a Rutgers defender headed a long Gretchen Miller free kick over the endline for a corner. Off the ensuing cross from senior Elisabeth Redmond, fellow senior forward KayAnne Gummersall found the service and headed it on target, where Scarlet Knights goalie Erin Guthrie pushed the ball into the post before collecting it.
