No. 10 BC Women's Soccer Advances To Second Round With 3-0 Victory

Boston College women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 3-0 victory over Central Connecticut at the Newton Soccer Field last night.

Boston College improved to 14-5-2 and will play the winner of the second game of the night - Harvard/Northeastern. Central Connecticut is now 12-7-4.

Duke Cruises Past Radford, 5-1, In The NCAA College Cup First Round

DURHAM, N.C.-- Five different players tallied a goal and eight different players scored a point as 15th-ranked Duke cruised to a 5-1 victory over Radford in the opening round of the NCAA College Cup first round at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils advance to the second round of action for the sixth straight season and will play William & Mary on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m., at home.

KayAnne Gummersall registered a goal and an assist for three points to lead Duke in the victory. The five goals were the most the Blue Devils have scored in their NCAA College Cup history. Coming into the game, Radford had not allowed more than two goals in a single contest this season.

Florida State Blanks Mississippi Valley State 7-0 In Opening Round Of NCAA Tournament

AUBURN, Ala. - Florida State (15-2-3) opened the 2008 NCAA Tournament in fine fashion with a 7-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State (10-11-2) on Friday afternoon in Auburn, Ala. Six different Seminoles scored in the first round including two goals from sophomore Sanna Talonen. With Friday's win, the Seminoles remained unbeaten in the first round of the NCAA Tournament moving to 8-0-1, while improving to 22-7-2 all-time including a mark of 8-7-2 on the road.

With seven goals on Friday afternoon, Florida State set the school record for goals in a postseason game. The previous record was six set against the Jacksonville Dolphins back in 2006.

Reserves Come Up Big In First Round UNC Victory

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's soccer team tallied a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes of play and then benefitted from the play of reserves in the second half as the fourth-ranked Tar Heels defeated Western Carolina 5-0 in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament Friday night at Fetzer Field. Heavy rains in the Triangle area poured down through most of the game as both teams often found the footing difficult to deal with it.

With the victory the Tar Heels advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. It will be UNC's 27th successive appearance in the Round of 32 of the tournament. Carolina will play either Atlantic 10 Conference champion Charlotte or Southeastern Conference champion Tennessee who played in the second first-round game Friday night at Fetzer Field.

Cavaliers Top Army 2-0 in NCAA First Round

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Army Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers outshot the Black Knights 22-1 in the contest and used goals from Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.) and Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) to advance to the round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament for the 15th consecutive season.

"I thought we did some good things tonight," said head coach Steve Swanson. "Army is very organized and a difficult team to play against. It had been a while since we had played a team that stayed back so much against us."

No. 23 Deacons Down Morehead State 2-0 in NCAA Tournament First Round

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jill Hutchinson and Bess Harrington scored goals as No. 23 Wake Forest (13-7-0, 5-5-0 ACC) downed Morehead State (9-9-3, 4-2-2 OVC) 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at Spry Stadium.

The Deacons advance to face James Madison at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes defeated Georgia 1-0 in the other first round game on Friday.

Miami's Season Comes to an End in 3-1 Loss to UCF

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - In their third NCAA Tournament match in program history, The University of Miami women's soccer team (10-9-3) fell to the UCF Knights (14-5-3), 3-1 at the University of Florida's James G. Pressly Stadium.

"I am extremely disappointed. I thought that was one of our best games as far as our performance and our effort and our ability to create the attack," said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. "I think we made some crucial errors, mental errors, and you can't do that when you play in the NCAA Tournament and when you play quality opponents like UCF."
