Nov. 11, 2007
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. - In a championship game rematch of No. 1 seed North Carolina and third-seeded Florida State, the Tar Heels earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon in the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship at Disney's Wide World of Sports® Complex. The league crown is the third in a row and 18th for the Tar Heels in the last 19 years the ACC has held a tournament. "It really is a thrill," North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance said. "I love representing the University of North Carolina. I love doing well in a superb league. It makes me very proud." North Carolina (17-3-1) outshot Florida State 12-3 in the game, but the Seminoles (13-5-3) were nonetheless determined in their pursuit. Sophomore Nikki Washington, who finished the tournament tied with six points and voted ACC Most Valuable Player, scored the only goal in the game and eventual game-winner in the 27th minute. The midfielder from Mesquite, Texas, blasted a shot on a cross from teammate Meghan Klingenberg which hit the left post before sailing into the net. Both teams had scoring opportunities in the second half. The Tar Heels tallied eight shots, including an early one by midfielder Tobin Heath just 30 seconds into the period. Heath fired a shot but FSU goalkeeper Erin McNulty caught the ball, only to have it bounce out of her hands. McNulty made a quick dive, stopping the ball at the line to keep it from rolling inside.
ACC Offensive Player of the Year Mami Yamaguchi led the Seminoles, posting all three shots in the game but was unable to find the back of the net. "A credit to Carolina," Florida State head coach Mark Krikorian said. "They are a great program. They found a way to score a goal and win the game." The Heels used two different goalkeepers in the battle against FSU. Junior Anna Rodenbough and sophomore Ashlyn Harris shared net duties, as Rodenbough played the first half and Harris saw action in the second. McNulty played all 90 minutes for the Seminoles, collecting five saves. Five Tar Heels were named to the ACC All-Tournament Team, including Washington. Florida State placed four on the squad, while Virginia and Wake Forest each had one. North Carolina and Florida State will next wait to find out their fate in the 64-team field when the NCAA Women's Soccer Selection Committee announces its selection Monday, November 12, on ESPNews between 8-8:30 p.m. 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer All-Tournament Team ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player: Nikki Washington, North Carolina -ACC- |
