Tar Heels Pushed to 2 OTs by Duke Before Exploding For 5-1 Win
November 5, 1998 ORLANDO, Fla. - The top-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team had to go into overtime Thursday afternoon to keep it's perfect record in tact. Freshman Anne Remy scored two goals and added one assist in the two extra periods to lift UNC to a 5-1 victory over Duke in the quarterfinals of the 1998 ACC Women's Soccer Tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex. North Carolina, seeking its 10th successive ACC Championship, now advances to the semi-finals Friday at 8 p.m. where it will play the winner of Thursday night's quarterfinal game between fourth-seed Wake Forest and fifth-seed Maryland. Thursday's match marked the first time the Tar Heels have been forced into overtime in the ACC tournament since the championship game of the 1988 Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. when the Tar Heels tied N.C. State 1-1 but lost the championship trophy on penalty kicks. Despite out-shooting Duke 35-4 for the game, the Tar Heels were stretched to their limits on Thursday. With the win, Carolina improved to 19-0 on the season. Duke's season ends with a record of 7-11-2. The Blue Devils got on the board first, scoring with only 1:18 remaining in the first half of play. Midfielder Sherrill Kester took a brilliant through pass from forward Emily Feeney and scored on a breakaway past Tar Heel goalkeeper Siri Mullinix. The Blue Devils led at the half 1-0, only the second time Carolina has trailed at halftime of any game of the season. The goal was only the sixth allowed by UNC in a game this season. UNC tied the game on their 14th shot of the contest and Lindsay Stoecker headed in a corner kick by Rebekah McDowell at the 62:07 mark. Despite nine more shots in the second half by the Tar Heels, the two teams went into overtime tied at 1-1. The Carolina defense prevented the Blue Devils from taking any shots on goal in the second half. Freshman Amy Remy of Norman, Okla. provided the winning goal for the Tar Heels at the 99:32 mark as she headed in a cross be Cindy Parlow. Laurie Schwoy also assisted on the play. "Cindy split two on the right wing and sent a perfect ball into the box," said Remy, whose two older sisters were both soccer stars at Duke. "It just needed to hit something and fortunately I was there." Later in the first overtime, Mullinex had to punch a shot by Feeney over the bar to preserve the tie. Carolina then exploded for three goals in the second half to record its eighth straight win over the Blue Devils. Freshman midfielder Jena Kluegel intercepted a Duke pass and lofted a shot past Duke Goal keeper Isis Dallas at the 108:28 mark to make the score 3-1 in favor of Carolina. Schwoy sent a shot past Dallas at 111:40 as she scored from 12 yards straight on, assisted by Meredith Florance and Remy. Remy then finished off the scoring at 117:13 as Florance intercepted a kick by Dallas and passed it to Remy in front for the Heel's fifth goal. "That was a very weird game," said the Tar Heel Head Coach Anson Dorrance, who improved his career record to 436-16-11. "Three factors contributed to that. First, you don't want to have to play your arch-rival in the first game of the tournament when you are at top seed and they are the last seed. The wind can also be a huge factor in women's soccer and the wet turf was something our kids did not make a good adjustment to. But to Duke's credit, they made everything tough on us today. But we were in trouble and we pulled it out. And we had two freshmen like Remy and Kluegel make big contributions in overtime. That is very encouraging."
