![]() Tar Heels Need Rally To Oust Wolfpack In ACC Quaterfinals

CARY, N.C. - No. 1 North Carolina fell behind in a game by more than one goal for the first time since the 2002 NCAA semifinals but rallied with six goals to beat NC State 6-2 Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference at SAS Soccer Park. The Tar Heels advanced to the semifinals where they will play the winner of tonight's Duke versus Virginia quarterfinal match at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Carolina found itself down by two goals very quickly Wednesday night as the Wolfpack jumped on the Tar Heels for a pair of goals in the first 17:06. The first goal came at 5:14 as Erin Griswold scored her 10th goal of the seasonon a breakaway, scoring into the right side of the goal from about eight yards out. Shortly after that the lead was 2-0 in the 18th minute as Lydia McBath's throw in went to Lindsey Underwood whose shot from 20 yards out over UNC goalie Aly Winget found the net. Carolina rallied though to tie the score by halftime. At 26:23, Heather O'Reilly took a pass in the box from Lindsay Tarpley and scored her sixth goal of the year from about six yards out. Then in the 35th minute, Sara Randolph's shot clanged off the cross bar and Lori Chalupny one-timed the rebound in the lower right for her ninth goal of the season. In the second half, UNC put the game away with a four-goal flurry in less than 20 minutes. At 55:36, Tarpley tallied her 19th goal of the season assisted by Elizabeth Guess and Kacey White. White served a corner kick which was flicked on by Guess to Tarpley who ended up scoring the game-winner. Over 10 minutes later it was 4-2 as White took a pass from Mary McDowell and deposted a shot into the upper left from 35 yards away. At 69:14, Chalupny served a long ball that appeared to be going over the end line but White caught up with it and then slotted the ball to the middle where McDowell one-timed the ball from NC State goalie Kim Selz for her fourth goal of the campaign. UNC finished off the scoring in the 76th minute as Anne Felts got her first goal of the year, converting from 10 yards with assists by Alyssa Ramsey and Maggie Tomecka. UNC improved to 19-0-0 on the season while NC State fell to 9-9-1.
