Duke, NC State Battle to 1-1 Draw
November 1, 1998 DURHAM, N.C. - Duke and N.C. State battled to a 1-1 tie in womens ACC soccer action at Duke Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It was the last regular-season match for both teams, as Duke closes out the 1998 campaign with a 7-10-2 record. N.C. States record is now 7-11-1. Both goals took place in the first half, within four minutes of each other. N.C. State opened the scoring when Shannon Blair knocked in an indirect kick at the 27:40 mark. At 31:13, Duke sophomore Kasey Truman (Sierra Madre, Calif.) scored on a header from a assist by Liz Speights (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.). The teams remained even for the rest of the match, as both recorded 11 shots on goal. Dukes senior goalkeeper Dana Piper (Littleton, Colo.) registered 8 saves while the Wolfpacks Sara Marino had three. It was Senior Day at Duke Soccer Stadium as Blue Devil seniors Kari Juncker (Glastonbury, Conn.), Mariana Muiruri (East Lansing, Mich.), Kristy Whelchel (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Piper were honored before playing in their final match. Next up for the Blue Devils is the 1998 ACC Tournament, which starts Thursday at the Disney Wide World of Sports Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla.
