Nov. 1, 2009
FSU Hangs On To Beat The Hokies The Seminoles become just the second school outside the state of North Carolina to claim the ACC regular season title. FSU joins Clemson, who finished first in the league standings with a 5-1-1 record in 2000. Sophomore Tiffany McCarty accounted for both Florida State goals in the win as it marked her fourth multi-goal game of the season and seventh of her career. She moved into second place all-time at FSU for career multi-goal games just two behind school record holder Sanna Talonen, who finished her career with nine. No. 7 Boston College Earns ACC Co-Championship The Eagles ended the season with a 15-2-1 overall record and an ACC record of 7-2-1. BC will share the regular season championship with Florida State, which also finished the season with a 7-2-1 conference record. It is the first ACC regular season title in the program's history. BC also secured the second seed in the ACC Tournament by virtue of the head-to-head series vs. Florida State.
BC junior Chelsea Regan would end the marathon game in the 108th minute. BC earned a corner kick and Hannah Cerrone sent a long ball into the box at about the 17 yard line. Regan out-jumped the Wake Forest defense and headed the ball over the Demon Deacons goalkeeper Amanda Barasha. It was Regan's third goal of the season and first game-winner. Defense Shines As No. 4 Tar Heels Edge No. 8 Maryland After dropping a pair of games last weekend, the Tar Heels bounced back this week to go 2-0 and finish the regular season 14-3-1 overall and 7-3 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 12-4-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the ACC with the loss. Carolina got the only goal it needed off the head of sophomore midfielder Maria Lubrano at 6:59 of the match. Junior defender Rachel Givan took a corner kick from the left side of the pitch and sent it to the far post where Lubrano had positioned herself. Lubrano nodded the ball back across the frame and snuck it inside the far left post for her second career goal. Her first career marker came earlier this season in UNC's 2-1 overtime win over Duke. Lipp, Blue Devils Sink Wolfpack, 2-0 With the victory, Duke closed the regular season with an 8-7-4 overall and 4-4-2 ledger in ACC action, while the Wolfpack finished with an 8-9-2 overall and 2-7-1 league record. The Blue Devils secured tied for sixth in the ACC standings and due to tiebreakers will be the eighth seed in the ACC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The first half was very even on both sides of the field as N.C. State held a 4-2 advantage in shots. Blue Devil sophomore Cody Newman had Duke's best scoring chance of the first half as senior Jane Alukonis sent a nice feed to the midfielder on the left side. Newman, who is from Bellerose, N.Y., drove the ball into the box and set up her right foot for a shot that Wolfpack goalkeeper Kim Kern saved. Cavaliers Down Miami 2-0 in Regular Season Finale The first half was completely dominated by the Cavaliers, outshooting the Hurricanes 13-1 before intermission. However, Virginia couldn’t take advantage of those chances and the game remained scoreless at the break. The Cavaliers continued the pressure in the second half and it paid off in the 54th minute. Lauren Alwine’s (Elizabethtown, Pa.) shot rattled the post and the rebound came right to Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.), who scored her seventh goal of the season. Virginia continued to have the better of chances and added an insurance goal in the 81st minute. Kika Toulouse (Arlington, Va.) sent a free kick into the box that fell to Alwine, who slotted home her sixth goal of the season. Overall, Virginia had a 24-5 shot advantage, and a 10-2 corner kick edge. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves in net to record her fourth consecutive shutout and her eighth of the season. Vikki Alonzo made four saves for the Hurricanes. |
